Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon (1635 – 1719) was the second wife of King Louis XIV of France. Her marriage to the king was never officially announced or admitted, though she was very influential at court. She came from very simple conditions, and married the 25 years older Paul Scarron, an accomplished poet and novelist, in 1652. He died in 1660. She met Madame de Montespan, who was secretly already the king's lover. Madame de Montespan took fancy to her, and placed her firstborn child with her and provided her with a large income and staff of servants. This brought her to the attention of Louis XIV, and she became the royal governess. By the late 1670s, the king spent much of his spare time with her, discussing politics, religion and economics. She married the king in a private ceremony in 1683, after the queens death. The marriage was morganatic though their children. She was regarded as the next most powerful person after the king, considered the equivalent of a prime minister after 1700. As a strongly religious person, she had a strong influence on the king. On the death of the king in 1715, she retired from court and died in 1719. A last visitor was Peter I of Russia.
