Catherine II (1729 – 1796), also known as Catherine the Great, born Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, was Empress of Russia from 1762 until 1796, the country's longest-ruling female leader. She came to power following a coup d'état when her husband, Peter III, was assassinated. (Many pretended to be her late husband during her reign.) Under Catherine, Russia was revitalised; it grew larger and stronger, and was recognised as one of the great powers of Europe. In her accession to power and her rule of the empire, Catherine often relied on her noble favourites, most notably Grigory Orlov and Grigory Potemkin. She governed at a time when the Russian Empire was expanding rapidly by conquest and diplomacy. The period of Catherine the Great's rule, the Catherinian Era, is often considered the Golden Age of the Russian Empire and the Russian nobility, and she enthusiastically supported the ideals of The Enlightenment, thus earning the status of an enlightened despot. Throughout her long reign, she took many lovers, often elevating them to high positions for as long as they held her interest. Her final order was announcing the heir to the throne, her grandson and not his father (her son).
