Lord Nelson‘s great love was Emma, a lady who had a quite remarkable past.
Her real name was Amy Lyon, but she preferred to be known as Emma Hart. She was born in 1765, a daughter of a Cheshire blacksmith, and was brought up in Wales by her grandmother. Not much is known about her early life.
Her way into the nobility of England, using her charm and beauty on stage as an actress (and was the favourite model for the artist George Romney), is a saga in itself.
Married with a nobleman, she captured the heart of England’s great naval hero, lord Horatio Nelson, and in 1801 Nelson and Emma were madly in love. That year their child, Horatia, was born. Nelson was delighted and finally decided to leave his wife and live with Emma.
After Nelson's death at Trafalgar in 1805 - Emma was bannned from his funural, as an adulteress - she lived in poverty and died almost forgotten in France in 1815, in deep debt. Her and lord Nelson's daugther, Horatia (who died in 1881) had to arrange Emma's funural in Calais, and then flee to England from the creditors.
