Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 – 1962) was an American politician, diplomat and activist. She was the longest-serving First Lady of the United States, having held the post from March 1933 to April 1945 during her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt's four terms in office, and served as United States Delegate to the United Nations General Assembly 1945 - 1952. President Truman later called her the "First Lady of the World" in tribute to her human rights achievements. She was a niece of President Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919). Her parents died when she was young. In 1905 Eleanor married her father's fifth cousin, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. They had six children. In 1921 Franklin was diagnosed with polio, which permanently paralyzed his legs. She persuaded him to stay in politics, despite of his condition. In the 1930s, Eleanor had a very close relationship with legendary aviator Amelia Earhart. During Franklin's administration, Eleanor became an important connection to the African-American population in the era of segregation. She also lobbied her husband to allow greater immigration of groups persecuted by the Nazis. Eleanor always advocated for Women's rights, and Human rights in general.
