At birth named Henriette-Rosine Bernard (1844 - 1923), but under the artist name Sarah Bernhardt she became the greatest French actress of the later 19th century and one of the best-known figures in the history of the stage. As daughter of a courtesan and an unknown father her future looked to be bleak, but one of her mother’s lovers, the duke de Morny, Napoleon III’s half brother, helped her to become an actress. When she was 16, she went to the Paris Conservatoire, the government-sponsored school of acting. She became the mistress of the prince de Ligne, and gave birth to her only child, Maurice. Throughout her life she had affairs with famous men, including the French writer Victor Hugo and the prince of Wales, the future Edward VII. During the Franco-German War in 1870, she organized a military hospital. She had become an expressive actress with a wide emotional range and her grace, beauty, charisma and unique voice was famed. She self-promoted her (e.g. by sleeping in a coffin) and come to tour the world. In 1905 she injured her right knee. By 1915 gangrene had set in and her leg had to be amputated but she didn't give up the stage, and was among the first actresses to perform in cinema.
