Marie Salomea Skłodowska Curie, 1867 – 1934, was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and only woman to win twice, the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two different sciences. Born in Warsaw, Poland, a part of the Russian Empaire, as daughter to a teacher. She lost her mother in 1878. Her higher education begun in Warsaw, but in 1891 she went to Paris for more qualified studies, where she met Pierre Curie. They married in 1895. Their daughter Irène (later awarded a Nobel prize) was born in 1897, Ève in 1904. In 1898 the couple announced the discovery of the element Pollonium (after Poland) and later that Year Radium. Marie received her doctorate from the University of Paris in 1903. The Curies and Henri Becquerel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics the same Year. The Curies were reluctant to go to Stockholm, but went in 1905. In 1906 Pierre was killed in a road accident. A few Years later she had an affair with a scholar of her husband, which caused a scandal. In 1911 Marie was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. During WW1 she worked with X-ray for the wounded. She died from aplastic anemia, due to radiation, in 1934. Her scientific discoveries are yet unsurpassed.
