Christina (1626 – 1689) was Queen of Sweden from 1632 until her abdication in 1654. At the age of six, Christina succeeded her father, King Gustav II Adolph, on the throne upon his death at the Battle of Lützen (defending Protestantism in the Thirty Years' War), but began ruling when she reached the age of 18, after the reign of the Royal Regency Council under Axel Oxenstierna. Christina was educated as a royal male would have been, and is remembered as one of the most educated women of the 1600s. She wanted Stockholm to be the "Athens of the North". She caused a scandal when she decided not to marry, and in 1654 when she abdicated her throne, converted to Catholicism and moved to Rome. Already at the age of nine she was impressed by the Catholic religion and the merits of celibacy. The Pope described Christina as "a queen without a realm, a Christian without faith, and a woman without shame." In 1657 at Fontainebleau, where she was staying, she found out that her servant, Monaldeschi, had betrayed her plans to take the Kingdom of Naples, and had him killed. The assasin in France was legal, since Christina had judicial rights over the members of her court. She regarded herself as queen regnant all her life.
