Elizabeth I (1533 – 1603) was Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 until her death in 1603. Sometimes called The Virgin Queen, Gloriana or Good Queen Bess, and the last monarch of the House of Tudor. Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, his second wife, who was executed when Elizabeth was 2 years of age. Anne's marriage to Henry VIII was annulled, and Elizabeth was declared illegitimate. During her half-sister (Bloody) Mary's reign, she was imprisoned for nearly a year, suspected to support Protestants. As queen, aged 25, Protestantism became state religion. She was expected to marry and produce an heir to continue the Tudor line. She never did, despite numerous courtships. Her reign is known as the Elizabethan era, famous for the flourishing of English drama and seafaring adventures. Her rival to the throne, Mary, Queen of Scots, she had imprisoned in 1568 and executed in 1587. After the victory of the Spanish armada in 1588, she gave her famous Tilbury speach: "...I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king...". Her later years were darkened by problems with Spain and Ireland, and finding an legal heir to the throne.
