Beskrivning

Florence Nightingale (1820 – 1910) was an English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. She came to prominence while serving as a manager of nurses trained by her during the Crimean War (1853 - 1856), where she organised the tending to wounded soldiers. She gave nursing a highly favourable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture, especially in the persona of "The Lady with the Lamp" making rounds of wounded soldiers at night. Later, she became a pioneer in the visual presentation of information and statistical graphics, using methods such as the pie chart. Her attention turned to the health of the British army in India and she demonstrated that bad drainage, contaminated water, overcrowding and poor ventilation were causing the high death rate. She concluded that the health of the army and the people of India had to go hand in hand and so campaigned to improve the sanitary conditions of the country as a whole; mortality fell from 6.9 % to 1,8 % in the army in 10 years. She never fought womens right (only the opposite) as she was religious, and never married. Her leagcy is the modern nursing and the first to use statistic to improve health care.
